The carpet was beautiful, just beautiful.  The many different colored strips of cloth all blended into the prettiest carpet they had ever seen. They could pick out pieces of faded red that had been cast-off flannel petticoats, and a dull blue that was Ma’s old wool wrapper, discarded when it finally fell all to pieces.  The carpet was thick and soft and bright and it covered the bare boards of the floor from corner to corner, with only a space left clear by the hearth, for fear of flying sparks.
